A demographic shift in Tapper's customer base prompted the move to Orchard Mall eight years ago. Customer loyalty was accentuated following a robbery at that store in 1996. "When we had that difficul- ty, people, our customers, came to the store the next day. But they did- n't come out of morbid curiosity. They came to say, 'We're with you, we're here for you." Howard and Susan, who live in Bloomfield Hills, have two children. Son Mark, 21, is studying finance at the London School of Economics. Daughter Marla, 23, is a consultant with Arthur Andersen & Co in Chicago. Steven and his wife Patti, an artist who creates the store's stunning ads — including their weekly back cover advertisements in the Jewish News, live in Orchard Lake with their three children, daughter Julia, 17, and twins Alex and Shayna Rose, 14. As president of the business, Howard handles the majority of the business details. Allen Brill, New York-based executive vice president of sales for Rolex Watch Co. in the U.S., is one of many in the industry that deal with Howard regularly. "I consider Howard to be an outstand- ing merchant, but equally a very ethical person, the kind of person Rolex is very proud to have an asso- ciation with for the better part of a decade," said Brill. The business has 65 employees, by most standards a lot for a one-store operation. And one of those employees, store manager Neale Stone, has been with the Tappers since the day the first store opened. Other long-term store employees include Estelle Fink, 24 years; Sandy Teitel, 22 years; Stanley Berlin, 20 years; and Deanna Kleiman, 19 years. But it's not just employees who have been with Tapper's from the start. Danny Klugman, New York- based diamond merchant with ASI, said, "I've been doing business with them for 25 years. They are giving, charitable, nice people who put their heart and soul into the jewelry store. They continuously give more than they have to give." Doris Panos is a highly respected jewelry designer who had a successful showing at the store in mid-April. Speaking from her New York studio, she said, "Tapper's is truly one of the most respected family operated busi- nesses in our industry." ❑ OUR TOYOTA TECHNICIANS WILL INSPECT YOUR: • Tire Wear/condition Front & Rear • Suspension System • Condition of battery/Cables • Clutch Hydraulic System (fluid, visual check) • Condition of Mcpherson Struts • Condition of Wiper blades • condition of Rear Shock Absorbers • Brake Pedal Adjustment • Engine of Transmission Oil Leak • Condition of Front Brakes • Condition of Belts/Adjustments • Brake Hydraulic System • Condition of Radiator/Coolant hoses (fluid, visual check) • Stop, Tail, Turn Signals, Lights (allow approximately 1 hour for inspection) Appointments now being taken.
