Shop From Home
s happy as Mother's Day is for
some, for others it's a
reminder of potential parent-
hood lost," says Diane St. Peters,
director of Alliance for Adoption, a
division of Jewish Family Service of
Metropolitan Detroit.
To reach out to couples thwarted in
their attempt to have children and
those who have experienced other losses
that include miscarriage and stillbirth,
St. Peters has created a Pregnancy Loss
Workshop 7-9 p.m. Monday, May 20,
at Temple Emanu-El.
Mary Madonis, a certified grief
counselor and an adjunct chaplain
(interfaith) at several Detroit hospitals,
will facilitate the group along with
Rabbi Joseph Klein of Temple Emanu-
El and Rachel Moskowitz, director of
the Center for Jewish Healing.
One in four births are not success-
fully brought to a live birth, says Sr.
Peters, causing men and women to
suffer the loss of potential parent-
hood.
Grief itself is a healing process, St.
Peters says. If a person is affirmed and
supported in her grief, she will truly
begin to heal.
"Over the years, we've learned that
grief denied does not go away; it goes
underground," she adds.
So the workshop is not only for
women with recent losses, but also for
any significant people who support them.
The workshop is free, but reserva-
tions are required. For information,
call Anna Donovan at JFS at (248)
559-1500, ext. 277.
