shows how Jewish women continually
redefined their roles within the
American-Jewish experience.
In the process, they helped to trans-
form America itself.
The struggle to achieve religious
equality within Judaism runs as a con-
stant theme throughout the book.
Women created and staffed Sunday
schools, formed sisterhoods, lobbied to
tear down the curtain that separated
them from men during services and,
beginning in 1972, even succeeded in
becoming rabbis.
In addition, Jewish women's entre-
preneurial ingenuity, a talent they
often needed in the Old Country to
support their families or supplement
their husbands' incomes, gave birth in
America to a vast array of consumer
products.
Lane (Lena) Himmelstein Bryant
created the first specially designed
maternity wear and later switched to
providing attractive clothing for larger-
sized women. Regina Horowitz

Margareten began the mass produc-
tion of kosher foods. Enid Bisset
designed bandeaus with cups to sup-
port rather than flatten women's
breasts, giving birth to the
Maidenform bra.
Jewish women also invented dispos-
able sanitary napkins and created the
Barbie doll.
Authors Diner and Benderly come
to this book from different profession-
al backgrounds. Diner is a professor of
American Jewish history at New York
University and has written numerous
books and articles. Benderly is an
award-winning journalist and author.
The combination of their expertise,
one as a learned historian and the
other as a noted journalist, has result-
ed in a truly intelligent and engaging
history.
Her Works Praise Her offers readers a
breath of fresh air, dispelling the cob-
webs of time. At long last, the story of
American Jewish women receives the
attention it so richly deserves. ❑

Jewish women, Lena
Leiderschnei der came to
America without her
parents. Just before her

Dakota, she hung their
