Prom is a high school rite of passage, but at West Bloomfield High
School, getting ready for prom is an educational experience. Julie Zalla,
a fashion merchandising teacher at West Bloomfield High School,
supervises 95 students who produce a two-hour evening of fashion held
in the school auditorium. "The students learn about fashion promo-
tion," says Zalla. "The goal is to explore careers in the future."
Students combine fashion savvy with business acumen in the process.
"It showcases what they've learned throughout the year," adds Zalla.
To prepare for the show, students contact local retailers for the clothing,
choose models, choreograph the event, sell tickets and raise funds for
charity. This year's event "United in Fashion," held on March 15,
raised funds for the American Red Cross and the Senior Class Prom.
