Writers Discuss
Jewish Detroit

The Birmingham Temple will cele-
brate the city of Detroit's 300th birth-
day with a three-session Writers'
Festival.
Local authors, versed in the history
of Jewish Detroit, will present and dis-
cuss their books:
• 8:30 p.m. Monday, May 6:
Author and historian David Lee
Poremba will speak on his work,
Detroit: A Motor City History. Poremba
is acting manager of the Burton
Historical Collection of the Detroit
Public Library.
• 8:30 p.m. Monday, May 13: Paul
R. Kavieff, author of Purple Gang:

Organized Crime in Detroit 1910-
1945, and The Violent Years:
Prohibition and the Detroit Mobs, will
share'stories of Detroit's Prohibition-
era gangs and crime figures of
Detroit's Jewish past.
• 8:30 p.m., Monday, May 20:
Archivist and historian Judith Levin
Cantor will discuss "Jews in
Michigan," her accounting of the
struggles and triumphs of the state's
Jews — beginning with the earliest
days of the British fur trade.
All events are free and will take
place at the Birmingham Temple.
Authors' books will be available for
purchase.

Council Holds
Special Shabbat

Detroit's Mosaic Singers and the choir.
from Star of the Sea Church of Grosse
Pointe will sing songs and prayers in a
Friday night service hosted by the
Grosse Pointe Jewish Council 8 p.m.
May 10 at the Grosse Pointe United
Church, at the corner of Lothrop and
Chalfonte.
The Mosaic Singers is made up of
Detroit-area teens and directed by
Kenneth Anderson.
The choir from Grosse Pointe's Star
of the Sea is directed by Kemmer
Weinhaus. Twenty-five members from
its 45-person choir will sing at the
GPJC service.
The service will be led by Rabbi
Nick Behrmann and cantorial soloist
Bryant M. Frank. GPJC members
Jennifer Weingarten and Paul Brennan
will sing.
Refreshments will be served at the
conclusion of the service. For reserva-
