with a terminal illness, her internist
immediately recommended Hospice

mother to our home, knowing I
would have support from a nurse,
aide, social worker and rabbi.

Elementary entries and 2,000 entries
statewide. The 16 Finalists attended
a reception at Detroit's International
Institute, where the top three essays
in the state were announced.
Nationally, 34 chapters of the
AILA have submitted entries. A
panel of judges comprised of mem-

bers of Congress, officials of the
Department of State and representa-
tives of immigration and advocacy
groups will choose the winning
essay. The national winner will be
announced on. May 10.
Shelby has one sister, Leah, 7.
Stephanie Snider, Shelby's proud
mother, said her daughter "was very
excited when she won at Green
school. She was hopeful when we
went downtown for the awards that
she would be in the top three. She
was in shock when she won.
"There were very few public
schools represented, most were
parochial. It shows the excellence of
the teachers and the school system in
West Bloomfield. It is quite an
accomplishment."
Paul Snider, Shelby's father, said,
"I am very proud, happy and excited
for her. I wanted to put the fact that
she won on a billboard. When I was
in sixth grade, I won an award and it
is something I will never forget. I
am sure Shelby will remember this
for the rest of her life." ❑

cake. Gerrnans, Poles, Italians and
Jews mixed together, lived along-
side of each other and went to
schools with one another. In
Europe, they might have hated
each other, but America has
always been open to differences in
people.
At times, we are not so tolerant
of different ethnicities, and that,
to me, is scary. We have to
remember that without the
diverse ba.ckgrounds of our
nation's people, America would
not be the country it is today. I
am proud to be an American and
live in a country where people can
have the hope and freedom they
desire.
To me, America sure makes a
delicious cake! ❑
