Cover Story AM YISRAEL CHAI from page 16 than that of Rabbi Daniel Syme of Temple Beth El. Using a Baptist- style, fire-and-brimstone cadence and delivery, he implored the crowd to pay attention." Said Rabbi Syme, "When 9-11 came, people all over the world protested that Islam was a religion of peace and love, and I was prepared to accept that. I, more than any other rabbi in this community, attended interfaith services to join hands in prayers for peace. "But I tell you, I've been forced to pay attention," he said. "I've got to ask myself, 'What sort of religion countenances Passover seder mas- sacres? What sort of religion counte- nances beautiful 18-year-old girls walking into supermarkets with explosives placed on their bodies? What sort of religion of love and peace creates curricula that teaches hate and killing — and the impera- tive to wipe out Jews from this world?'" Admonishing local Muslim leaders for their silence, Rabbi Syme said, "When Baruch Goldstein slaughtered Arabs in prayer [at Hebron's Tomb of the Patriarchs in 1994], every rabbi in America denounced him. Yet, with two lukewarm exceptions in our com- munity, the silence of the imams has been deafening." He called Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat "a liar and a pathetic creature. "He cannot be believed, and he still harbors dreams of Israel's destruc- tion," Rabbi Syme said. "Arafat must go. He can't seem to find the words unequivocally to denounce terrorism. "The Jews of the world are in dan- ger," the rabbi said. "Until terrorism ends, I am done being reasonable, I am done being understanding, I am done with debate, I am done with services [with Muslim leaders]," he shouted to wild applause. "I support the state of Israel unconditionally. "When Germany declared war on the United States, we didn't assemble a group to discuss why Hitler didn't like us; we won the war and then we made the peace," he said. "When Osama bin Laden and his thugs attacked the World Trade Center, President Bush didn't ask, 'Why do these people hate us so much?' He went into Afghanistan and is winning the war. "We will make the peace and, my friends, the same is true of Israel," he said. "We [Israel] will win the war on terrorism and then we will make the peace." ❑ " Seek the experts at Harper University Hospital for your cardiac care.
