Teens Make Music
With A Mission
R
ather than mourn the post-
ponement of Teen Mission
2002, scheduled for June,
the 11 local participants have decid-
ed to do something for Israel.
Joined by siblings and friends, the
teens will perform their own concert
to benefit Magen David Adorn
(MDA) and the Jezreel Valley
International Center for Arts &
Culture in Israel. The concert, being
held in a private home, is scheduled
for 4 p.m. Sunday, May 5. Vocal and
instrumental selections, from classi-
cal to Israeli folk music, will be pre-
sented by the youth, ages 9-17.
"I felt my kids should be doing
something more for Israel than just
attending rallies," said Ruth Zerin of
West Bloomfield. "I want them to be
able to look back and say they did
all they could for Israel."
Her children and their friends are
musical, so they decided to hold the
benefit concert. It is a way for the
Teen Mission particip'ants to make a
direct connection with 19 Israeli
teens they met the week before
Passover from Michigan Jewry's
Partnership 2000 region in the
Central Galilee. Zerin said the local
and Israeli teens, brought together
by the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit, are staying in
contact. They would have traveled
together on the Teen Mission.
"The teens chose the MDA
because the need is so great and the
cultural organization because that's
youth helping youth," Zerin said.
"The message here is that while
Palestinian children are really being
taught to do destructive things for
their cause, to strap on bombs and
kill other children in the process,
our children are being reared to
value life and to know that every life
is important," she said.
Space is limited for the concert.
For directions to the private home,

Donations for the Israeli charities
also can be made through Zerin.
