life of a writer.
The author, whose par-
ents were both Holocaust
survivors, says now that
his Bohemian upbringing
enhances his outlook on
life. "My parents both
know seven different lan-
guages, but neither of
them finished high
school," he says. "My dad
used to say, 'If you stay in
one job for more than five
years, you get bored.'"
Some years the family
was very well off and
other years were lean. "It
was very unstable," Keret
says, referring to a lifestyle
that was fairly secular but
maintained a strong sense
of Jewish identity.
Part of Keret's sense of identity
comes from living in Israel. "It
comes from my heritage and culture,
my point of view and lifestyle here,"
he says.
Keret is also of the opinion that
the Jewish point of view is "very cos-
mopolitan. Jews are in society, yet
very critical of society. On one tier,
you live in society; on the other tier,
you see when lines are crossed that
you can't identify with.
"It has to do with the way we
study things by argument," he said.
"Jewish heroes have always argued.
They debated their way to the
truth."
Keret automatically finds himself
looking at life as a Jew in Israel as an
outsider. Sometimes, the 34-year-old
literally becomes an outsider by

"I discover the beautiful things I
took for granted, the things I saw
but stopped looking at. When I go
abroad, it's easier for me to write
about Israel."
Writing exclusively in Hebrew
makes the writing more powerful
and makes it an almost holy experi-
ence," Keret says.
He says that reading his stories
translated into English for the first
time was somewhat traumatic
"because there are so many things
you can do in your own language
that you really can't in another. It's
like kissing through a handkerchief,"
