Julian Bond, chairman of the National
Association for the Advancement of
Colored People (NAACP), will be the
guest speaker at Temple Beth El's 7:30
p.m. services Friday, May 10.

rights, economic justice
and peace since his col-
lege days at Morehouse
College in Atlanta dur-
ing the 1960s, when he
was among the
founders of the
Student Nonviolent
Coordinating
Committee (SNCC).
_Julian Bond
Bond is a veteran of
more than 20 years in
the Georgia General Assembly. His serv-
ice in the assembly began in 1966 when a

and three times denied by members of

in the house followed by six in the senate.
He was nominated for vice president, the
first black to be so honored by a major
party, but withdrew his name because he
was too young to serve.
He has served four terms on the
NAACP national board and was presi-
dent of the Atlanta NAACP from 1978-
1989. He is president emeritus of the
Southern Poverty Law Center.
Bond is a distinguished scholar-in-resi-
dence at the American University in
Washington, D:C., and a professor in the
department of history at the University of
,Virginia.
Bond is the temple's 2002 Milton M.
Alexander Memorial lecturer. His topic
on May 10 will be "Justice and the
