Hide Identity?

Berlin/JTA — Berlin police gave mixed
messages about whether they are advis-
ing Jews to hide their identity for fear of
attack.
A police spokesperson told an Israeli
reporter that Jews in Berlin might want
to hide their Stars of David necklaces or
avoid wearing yarmulkes because police
can't protect all of them from possible
attack. Later, the office of the city's
police chief denied that police were giv-
ing Jews such advice.
The spokesperson's comment, as well
as the official police statement, drew an
angry reaction from Rabbi Chaim
Rozwaski, one of Berlin's chief rabbis.
It is time tocreatean atmosphere
where hostility toward Jews is not
acceptable," he said. "Jews should not
have to hesitate to express their
Jewishness. Problems in the Mideast are
no excuse for hooliganism in Berlin."

Tunisia Explosion
Called Terror

Berlin/JTA — An April 11 truck explo-
sion at a Tunisian synagogue was defi-
nitely a terror attack, according to
Germany's interior minister.
"Germany is now convinced that this
was 100 percent a criminal, terrorist
act," Otto Schily said in Tunis after •
meeting with investigators.
Sixteen people, including 11 German
tourists, died when a truck filled with
natural gas crashed into the historic
Ghriba Synagogue on the Tunisian
resort island of Jerba.

Singer Tribute
Is Canceled

Tel Aviv/JTA — A tribute to Israeli
singer Yaffa Yarkoni was canceled after
she criticized Israel's military operation
in the West Bank.
In an Independence Day interview
last week on Army Radio, Yarkoni also
voiced support for reserve soldiers who
refuse to serve in the territories. As a
result, the Israeli Union of Performing
Artists canceled the show, saying spon-
sors withdrew their support and ticket
holders returned their tickets. The can-
cellation was criticized by other artists,
who accused the association of failing to
support one of its members.
