on the prospects of winning the war
against terrorism and changing the
_regime in Iraq. They warned, however,
that it would take a major commitment
of American ground troops, and that
taking Baghdad would likely be bloody
and extended. Israeli military and diplo-
matic commentators Ze'ev Schiff and
Ehud Ya'ari agreed that Israel would win
the war, but said that the suicide bomb-
ings and Arab terror do pose an existen-
tial threat. Schiff noted that Arafat has
been successful in severely damaging
relations between Israel's Arabs and
Jews, has prevented Arab nations from
supporting a U.S. attack on Iraq and
c`succeeded in unleashing European
anti-Semitism."While supporting the
idea of a Palestinian state, they agreed
that Israel could not repeat the offer
that Barak and former President Bill
Clinton had made.
The more than 700 students from
across the nation who attended the con-
ference were a source of strength noted
by virtually every speaker who addressed
the gathering. While well treated, there
was some grumbling when they were
placed in an overflow room with video
screens for the Congressional dinner.
But near the end of Netanyahu's speech,
they were informed they would have a
special session with him, and they virtu-
ally stampeded down the hall to fill the
area where they would meet.
The students were singing "Am Yisrael
Chaff' (The People of Israel Lives),
chanting "Bibi, Bibi," and trying to
surge to the front of the group to shake
his hand and take pictures. Netanyahu
had to calm the crowd to share his
experiences as a student at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
in the early 1970s, which turned him
into a political activist. He urged the
boisterous crowd to use their college
experiences as a base for lifelong
activism. The crowd rose spontaneously
to sing Hatikvah as Netanyahu left,
many with tears in their eyes.
"At first, people were ecstatic, but a
little bit nervous not knowing what to
expect. The energy kept building.
People kept saying, 'I can't believe it, I
can't believe it,"' said Zachi Rosenberg,
23, a WSU student who chairs the
Detroit Friends of Israel. "The confer-
ence was great, but the session with Bibi
was a very, very amazing experience. We
were rejuvenated. We will use that ener-
gy as we fight for Israel on campuses
across the country." ❑
