Israel Celebrates
Independence

Jerusalem/JTA — Israel celebrated its
54th Independence Day under heavy
security for possible terror attacks.
Though many public events were
canceled out of fear of terrorism, a
number of traditional observances
were held, including a reception at the
president's official residence in
Jerusalem and air force flights over
various parts of the country.

PLO To Get
D.C. Office?

Washington/JTA — President Bush
waived for six months a law blocking the
PLO from having a Washington office.
The waiver has been enacted twice a
year since 1994, after the signing of
the Oslo peace accords. Bush said in a
memo that "it is important to the
national security interests of the
United States" to have a PLO office in
Washington.

Sharon Criticizes
E.U. Position

Jerusalem/JTA — Prime Minister
Ariel Sharon lashed out at European
leaders for their position in the Israeli-
Palestinian conflict.
In an interview with Army Radio,
Sharon said European leaders "have
shown interest in the toilet paper"
supply to Palestinian Authority leader
Yasser Arafat, but they "did not bother
to call me to express condolences to
Israel after the horrible attacks that
were here." Sharon linked their behav-
ior to Europe's silence during the
Holocaust.

Jewish Tourists
Are Warned

Los Angeles/JTA — The Simon
Wiesenthal Center issued an advisory
urging Jewish tourists to exercise
extreme caution" when visiting
France and Belgium.
In its first action of the kind, the
Center warned that in the past 18
months "there have been more than
400 hate crimes against Jewish targets"
in Paris and other French cities,
including arson attacks against syna-
gogues and beatings of Jewish pedes-
trians. In Belgium, Jews "have been

Religious Streams
Win AZM Votes

Jerusalem/JTA — Led by the Reform
movement, the three traditional reli-
gious streams garnered most of the
votes in the American Zionist elections.
Votes translate into seats at the
World Zionist Congress, which
means influence over the $350 mil-
lion budget of the Jewish Agency for •
Israel. ARZA/World Union, the
Zionist arm of the Reform move-
ment, won 61 delegates the com-
bined number won by the
Conservative movement's MERCAZ
USA, which won 32 seats, and the
Orthodox-supported Religious
Zionist Movement, which took 29.
The Religious Zionist Movement
nearly doubled its numbers from the
last election, five years ago.

Heritage Week
Is Proclaimed

Washington/JTA — President Bush
proclaimed this week as Jewish
Heritage Week.
In his proclamation, Bush noted the
many contributions Jewish Americans
have made to the arts, education,
industry, science and the American
way of life. "The values and traditions
of Judaism have contributed greatly to
our culture and history; and they have
played a major role in the success of
our great nation," he said.

Shul Blast
Intentional?

Berlin/JTA — German police arrested
a man suspected of involvement in an
April 11 truck explosion at a Tunisian
synagogue.
The suspect was taken into custody
in the western German city of
Duisburg following a tip about a
phone call made before the attack,
which killed 15 people, 10 of them
German tourists.
Two London-based Arab-language
papers reported that a group calling
itself the Islamic Army for the
Liberation of the Holy Sites was
