About a dozen uniformed and
plainclothes police officers kept the
two groups separated during the -
peaceful two-hour rally. A larger
police presence and barricades could
have been immediately called in if
needed, said a Capitol police
spokesman.
As a small group acted out a scene
in which three Israeli soldiers allegedly
beat to death Palestinian civilians on
their way to pray, the pro-Israeli sup-
porters turned their backs.
When Amer Zahr, a Palestinian-
American graduate student from the
University of Michigan, spoke to the
crowd about halting America's $3 bil-
lion in aid to Israel, the crowd began
to chant "Money for education, not
for occupation," and approached the
counter-demonstrators.
The counter-demonstrators replied
by softly singing Hatikvah.
"We stand in silence and in peace,"
said Steve Migliore, a counter-demon-
stration organizer and an MSU senior
from Farmington Hills. "We are here
as Jewish students, as parents, and as
non-Jews — a variety of people show-
ing support for Israel and showing
support for peace. We want peace
more every day, but we are not going
to give up on Israel to get peace.
