Special to the Jewish News
A
aron Comess isn't interest-
ed in unrolling verbal red
tape or posing as a rock 'n'
roll politician. He just
wants fans to know the Spin Doctors,
one of MTV's favored acts of the '90s,
has reunited its original members for
an upcoming concert tour that's ready
to bus a cargo of multiplatinum
memories and more.
"This is the band that everybody
knows," notes the 34-year-old drummer
of the group. "The fact that we haven't
played together in a while has given us a
tremendous amount of onstage energy,
and I think it's really going to be a great
tour." The band visits the Blind Pig in
Ann Arbor on April 23.
The Spin Doctors, comprised of
founding Jewish members Chris
Barron (lead singer), Eric Schenkman
(guitar) and Comess (percussion),
along with bass player Mark White,
achieved international fame with their
Epic album Pocket Full of Kryptonite.
The 1993 release featured the New
York-based act's initial radio hit, "Little
Miss Can't Be Wrong," and its Top-10
follow-up, "Two Princes." More than 7
million copies sold worldwide.
Being suddenly in demand and bar-
raged with a whirlwind of opportuni-
ties, the band had a guest spot during
David Letterman's debut week on
CBS, backing (and later appearing at
Carnegie Hall with) Roger'Daltrey of
the Who.
The group's good fortune continued
with a newly recorded cover version of
Creedence Clearwater Revival's 1971
hit "Have You Seen The Rain?" that
was included on the best-selling
soundtrack of Tom Hanks' 1993 film
Philadelphia.
Ups And Downs
By 1999, however, the Spin Doctors
were experiencing ups and downs,
weathering mixed reviews for the
group's subsequent albums -
Homebelly Groove, Turn It Upside
Down and You've Got To Believe in
Something - while undergoing a
handful of personnel changes.
And any hope to capitalize on the
release of Here Comes The Bride, the
group's last-recorded offering, was
shattered by a paralyzing vocal-chord
ailment that sidelined lead singer
Barron and unexpectedly brought the
curtain down on the group's future.
The way of the music business isn't
easy, according to Comess, who has
continued working as a studio drum-
mer for aspiring world music and jazz
artists. Yet, philosophically, he regards
the premature final chapter of the
Spin Doctors as "just a part of life."
"After Chris lost his voice and
couldn't speak for six months, we can-
celed a tour and decided to give the
band a rest," Comess explains. "But in
the last year or so, there had been talk
about getting all four original mem-
bers back together.
"Then a club in New York City
called the Wetlands asked if we were
interested in doing one of their last
shows. We used to play there all the
time, and it was the location for our
live Up For Grabs album, so it seemed
like a perfect way to get all four guys
back together and give it a shot.
"We had a really successful gig, the
music sounded great and there was a
nice turnout. That opened up the
doors for us to do something again.
As good as the music was, it seemed a
shame not to stay together."
The essential Spin Doctors reper-
toire, best heard on Epic/Legacy's
compilation CD Just Go Ahead Now:
a Retrospective, is only a portion of
what audiences will be hearing on the
band's tour itinerary.
Comess says the group has decided
to add a handful of previously
unrecorded songs that were written
and stockpiled over the years, to give
their affectionately called "Spinheads"
