Islamic Association of Saskatchewan
expressed concern and dismay over
the recent firebomb attack on a
Saskatoon synagogue.
Police told the Saskatoon StarPhoenix
newspaper that the blaze at the Jewish
Community Centre and Synagogue
Friday night, April 5, was deliberately set.
Preliminary investigations indicate a
bottle filled with flammable liquid was
thrown through the basement window
of the Congregation Agudas Israel
Synagogue.
Community archives and religious
texts valued at $100,000 (Canadian)
were destroyed in the fire. Another
$30,000 is estimated in smoke and
water damage to the building.
Dr. Ahmed Shoker, spokesperson
for the Islamic Association of
Saskatchewan, said, "I personally, as
do many of our members, feel very
secure to go anywhere in this city and
even to go into the synagogue. We
have many friends from the Jewish
community. Any kind of action like
that is unacceptable," he said.
Police are investigating the fire as
arson and have not found any evi-
dence linking it to the ongoing vio-
lence in the Middle East.
"We're certainly heartened by the lit-
erally hundreds of phone calls we've
received from across the country," the
congregant said. "We've received offers
of donations of books and money. It's
been terrific, so that's certainly buoyed
our spirits somewhat."

BBYO Status:
Independent

New York/JTA — B'nai B'rith Youth
Organization, long a department of B'nai
B'rith International, officially became an
independent, self-governing organization.
Although it was announced last
summer that the 77-year-old nonde-
nominational Jewish youth group
would become independent, the final
details were not completed until last
week. The group is still receiving
office space and some funding from
BBI, but is also receiving funds from
several major Jewish family founda-
tions, including the Charles and Lynn
Schusterman Family Foundation.
