the English department at the
University of Windsor. The author
attended yeshiva in Detroit and then
studied at the Telshe Yeshiva in
Cleveland before attending Yeshiva
University and Albert Einstein College
of Medicine. He now works part time
at Mount Sinai Medical Center in
Manhattan as a neuroradiologist.
On his coffee table at home is a
copy of the Tanakh, and nearby is a
large two-volume Hebrew-English
dictionary along with audio tapes of
novels - in German and Hebrew, which
he enjoys listening to in order to
sharpen his language skills.
He offers a thick, boxed set of books,
The Central Nervous System of Vertebrates,
for a guest to lean a computer on.
Stollman is unusual among Jewish
literary novelists in his ability to read
Hebrew texts in the original, and in
his knowledge of sources.
Although he's no longer observant,
he's engaged in an ongoing way in the
study of texts. In his modest way, he
acknowledges that his yeshiva back-
ground enriches his writing and adds a
certain depth. And there are probably
few other people writing fiction that
relates to memory who understand the
workings of the brain as well as
Stollman does.
Next year, Stollman will publish a
collection of short stories. ❑
