Motivations

The reasons behind all the activity —
the rush to fill in the blanks where
authentic Jewish culture once existed —
are complex, as Gruber explains, and
she peels back many layers of meaning.
In explaining the variety of motiva-
tions, she describes how memory of
Jews is used as a ((vehicle for self-discov-
ery and self-exploration" and how nos-
talgia and pseudo-nostalgia for an ideal-,
ized image of the Jew are acted upon.
Other driving forces include
Holocaust guilt, ethnic curiosity or an
intellectual attachment to Jews and the
world that is no more.
She notes that sincere, thoughtful
efforts that may lead to deeper academ-
ic, humanitarian or other involvement
can exist side-by-side with the superfi-
cial — and also with Holocaust denial.
She also points out that philo-
Semitism and anti-Semitism co-exist.
Recently, she was walking up the Via
Cavour in Rome and saw graffiti with a
Star of David surrounded by the word
raus," German for "out." Soon after,
there was a concert of Yiddish/klezmer
music in the Quirinale Palace, the for-
mal residence of Italy's president.

The Future

Gruber admits that she's ambivalent about
the cultural trends she's reporting on.
While she admires many of the par-
ticipants, applauds their interest and
sensitivity, and is pleased that Jewish
culture is recognized as part of
European culture, she is also made
profoundly uneasy" by the intensity
with which some people have built
their identities around a kind of resus-
citation they have enacted.
"Sometimes I detect a creepy touch
of necrophilia," she says, and adds that
the "crass exploitation and commer-
cialism is also hard to take."
In the afterword, she writes, "There
is growing urgency among Jews that
unless they themselves take positive
action, the "Jewish thing" may be
hijacked, if not watered down to a
homeopathic degree: Jewish cultural
products displacing Jewish culture.
An affirmation that Jews and Jewish
culture are not simply dusty or sancti-
fied museum relics is essential.
Some Jewish organizations, such as
the newly founded European
Association of Jewish Culture, have
begun grant programs and other activ-
ities aimed at supporting the produc-
tion of Jewish culture by Jews.
Without a living Jewish dimension,
they fear, the virtual Jewish world may
become a sterile desert — or a haunt-
ed Jewish never-never land. 1-1
