H
aving just returned from a visit to Prague, I
was struck by the tenacity of the people of
that fairytale-like city to revitalize their sur-
roundings after years of Communist rule.
It's a vibrant, cultural center, filled with music, art, ren-
ovated flats and apartments, and multi-cultural restaurants
and retail shops. Prague's Jewish Town includes a 13th-
century synagogue and a cemetery (above) that dates
back to 1439. Of course, the magic lies in the fanciful,
15th-century Baroque architecture.
In our own city, a couple of visionaries are working hard
to re-energize downtown
Detroit. David and Andy
Farbman have developed two
residential properties — Lofts @
Woodward Center and 200 River
Place Lofts. "We have to bring
this city back," says David. Read
about their pioneering efforts
and see one of the upscale loft
interiors in this issue.
As we approach baseball sea-
son, we examine one man's pas-
sion for baseball collectibles,
specifically bobbing-headed
dolls. "My collection is the envy
of 6-year-olds everywhere," says
Joel Sklar. His wife, Jill, who
writes about the "invasion of the
boys," recounts the evolution of
this burgeoning collection.
If you've always wanted to know how to roll your own
sushi, check out the photos from the "Roll With the Rabbis"
event at Congregation Shaarey Zedek. Rabbis Jonathan and
Lauren Berkun led a hands-on demonstration to an enthusi-
astic, packed crowd at the synagogue. "The most fun I've
ever had in synagogue," raved one participant.
So, you're not into sushi? Try Margarida's Frittata for a
seasonal change-of-pace dinner. The recipe's inside, along
with a preview of Carolyne Roehm's gorgeous new home
entertaining book.
And so we welcome springtime.
Fondly,
Linda
