pushing them to the ground. The two
men, described as wearing clothing
that identified them as Orthodox
Jews, suffered minor injuries. The
attack came after German officials
said they would increase security at
Jewish sites following attacks on
Jewish sites in Belgium and France,
and following pressure from German
Jewish leaders.
To extend Middle East violence `to
include all Jews shows the true,
grotesque face of fanatical Islamists,
who ultimately want to dump Israel
in the sea and see Judaism as public
enemy No. 1," said Michel
Friedman, vice president of the
Central Council of Jews in Germany.

Americans Mistrust
Saudi Peace Plan

New York/JTA — Only 26 percent of
Americans belie\-re the Saudi peace ini-
tiative is sincere, according to a new
poll.
In a poll of more than 1,000
Americans, 31 percent believe the
Saudis launched the initiative to
improve their image in the United
States. Sixty-two percent of respon-
dents believe the Saudis are not ready
to accept Israel's right to exist.
The plan calls for the Arab world to
make peace with Israel in return for a
withdrawal from all lands Israel cap-
tured in the 1967 Six-Day War. The
survey, commissioned by the Institute
for Jewish & Community Research,
has a 3 percent margin of error.

Clinton Regrets
Rich Pardon

New York/JTA — President Clinton
said he regrets pardoning billionaire
financier Marc Rich.
Clinton told Newsweek magazine
that he would not grant the pardon
again "just for the politics."
Rich fled the United States to
Switzerland in 1983 after he had been
indicted on 51 counts of tax evasion,
racketeering and violating trade sanc-
tions with Iraq.
His attorneys launched a major ini-
tiative on his behalf, courting Israeli
and American Jewish activists to
impress Clinton with Rich's philan-
thropic activities.
"It was terrible politics," Clinton
said of the pardon. It wasn't worth
the damage to my reputation. But that
doesn't mean the attacks were true."
