with oil, as if intended for use with a
lawnmower or snow blower; the mix-
ture prevented the gasoline from fully
igniting. Aside from minor smoke
damage, the restroom also had Stars
of David spray-painted on the walls.
Meanwhile, Monsignor Easton,
who was finishing the prayer service,
was asked by police to evacuate the
church. No one was hurt. "Everyone
left very quickly and quietly," the
monsignor said.
Monsignor Easton said he has never
had contact with the accused, but
feels the crime was not the work of a
mentally balanced individual.
Goldenberg's attorney Gold,
acknowledging his client's link to the
fire, said his job is to "somehow try to
convince the [Oakland County] pros-
ecutor's office and the judge that this
is not a terrorist — that he shouldn't
be viewed in the same way as the ter-
rorists who are doing acts of terror to
this country or to Israel. He is not
tied to any group," Gold said.
"This was an impulsive act on the
part of a young man who overdosed
on uppers that he got over the count-
er, and the anti-depressants he was
prescribed, to act on an impulse on a
church."
The founder of the church, Father
Charles Coughlin, was one of
America's most vocal anti-Semites
during the 1930s. The building was
paid for in part by individuals around
the country who followed the radio
broadcasts of the church's founder.
Ironically, the limestone building
with a landmark tower of has relief of
Jesus on the cross, erected in the
1930s, replaced the parish's former
home — a wood-frame structure
twice torched by the Ku Klux Klan.
Father Coughlin said he wanted a
structure that would withstand fur-
ther arson attempts.
In recent years, the clergy and
parishioners have addressed the
church's anti-Semitic past and sought
to make contrition with the Jewish
community. Many ecumenical services
have been held in the church. Also,
Catholic leaders, in the parish and at
the Archdiocese level, have denounced
the actions of Father Coughlin and
sought to build stronger Catholic-
Jewish relations.
The incident, in fact, came two
weeks after a Christian Holocaust
Memorial Service, held in the church
for the third year as a way for the
Christian community to come to terms
with its lack of response to Jewish
needs during the Nazi occupation of
Europe during World War II. 1-1
