STREETS WAYN E STATE UNIVERSITY from page 14 14th Annual Samuel M. Levin Economics Award Lecture Stephanie Dorfman, Mike Skoczylas and Pam Goldfaden, all of West Bloomfield, make posters. A group of teenagers displayed their messages of "Peace for Israel" and "Stop Suicide Bombers" at the corner of 14 Mile and Orchard Lake roads in West Bloomfield. "We feel it's really important for the whole community, especially the teen-age community, to show our support for Israel," said Pam Goldfaden, 18, of West Bloomfield. "It's ironic that all of this is happen- ing right around Pesach," said Mike Skoczylas, 17, of West Bloomfield, "because the Haggadah says that in every generation someone rises up to try and stop the Jews, and that God always helps us. It's our job now to get together and give God a good reason to help us — to show the world that we are united in Israel, in New York and here in Detroit." Although a few of the passing motorists shouted negative comments as they drove by, for the most part, demonstrators at all locations were greeted with honking horns and raised thumbs. Don Cohen was pleased with the turnout, and with the positive response from the community. "A man was out speed-walking; he saw us, grabbed a sign and joined us," said Cohen, whose group worked the cor- ner of Maple and Telegraph in Bloomfield Township. More demonstrations are planned, with the next scheduled for April 11, the seven-month anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on America. And other plans are being considered. "We will explore other ways to deliver a resolute, but mainstream message in ways that are not necessari- ly mainstream," Cohen said. ❑ For information about future Israel advocacy events, contact Don Cohen, ayc4israel@comcast.net a "The International Organization and Enforcement of Labor Standards" • Friday, April 19, 3 - 4:30 • Spencer Part-rich Auditorium, Law School, 471 W.
