"After the Haifa blast last weekend, `What can I do?' was the big question on everyone's lips," said Don Cohen of West Bloomfield, community activist and Israel advocacy consultant, who organized the demonstrations. "I was looking for a way to channel peo- ple's energy into something grassroots, positive and public." With only one day's notice, Cohen asked volunteers to help organize groups to stage peaceful demonstra- tions. The six intersection's in Detroit's northwest suburbs. included locations in Oak Park, Farmington Hills and West Bloomfield. Participants were asked to make and carry signs convey- ing their support for Israel and calling for an end to the violence. They went to their locations during the Monday afternoon rush hour. "The goal was not just to gather, but also to advocate," Cohen said.
