The greatest reason the Holocaust
occurred was mankind lost the ability
to view others for what they truly were
— human beings. Suddenly, neighbors
and friends became lower than animals
and were no longer considered to be
human. Suddenly, it became acceptable
to humiliate people in the streets.
Suddenly, it became necessary to sen-
tence millions of innocent victims to
gas chambers, fire pits and firing
squads. Suddenly, life became unwor-
thy of life. The Holocaust was allowed
to occur because hate is still very much
a part of any civilized culture, always
hiding beneath the surface waiting for a
chance to destroy and devastate.
Those who never experienced the
Holocaust, and even those who sur-
vived it, may never understand why
such an atrocious and contemptible
thing occurred, but this does not excuse
us from educating ourselves about it.
We must educate ourselves, and those
who come after us, so that a tragedy of
this magnitude may never, ever, be
allowed to happen again.
The study of the Holocaust is rele-
vant nearly seven decades after the fact
because in it, we find the importance
and necessity of being informed about
the world around us. Knowledge is
truly power. We must learn and, in
turn, teach posterity the necessity of
having one's own mind and standing
for what one believes in because, as the
saying goes, if a person doesn't stand for
something, he or she is liable to fall for
anything.
The Holocaust must be shared as the
world's fault, its error in turning deaf
ears to the plight of millions. We must
all know, and tell the stories of, the mil-
lions who innocently fell victim, so that
through their experiences and words,
they may live on. We have a duty, an
obligation, to remember for the negli-
gence of the past as well as for the
redemption of the future.
The Holocaust was the slaughtering
of six million Jews and countless others,
allowed to happen due to the indiffer-
ence of the world. It was a hate crime
to the maximum degree. Why must we
remember?
There are some who say that history
has no relevance for the living, that it is
a thing of the past. As time marches
solemnly through the decades and cen-
turies of the human race, we must cling
to this truth. To quote George
Santayana in Life of Reason: "Those
who cannot remember the past are con-
demned to repeat it." ❑
