FINE CHINESE DINING

LEGACY from page 77

7,„

wonderful adventure in fine dining" — Danny Raskin

artist relented when he realized pornogra-
phers also made mainstream films and
could cast him in a "real" movie.
A snag occurred when his grandma
Rose (listed as R. Hyatt in the phone
book) was pestered at all hours by
prospective suitors who'd seen Jeremy
in Playgirl. "She had to move out of her
apartment for a month," he confides.
"My father told me, 'If you want to
get into this naked, crazy business, so
be it, but if you use the family name
again, I'll kill you."
Jeremy says he dutifully adopted his
middle name and "prayed" he'd make
just a couple of porn films and move
on. But when Hollywood didn't come
calling, he went on to star in and
direct more than 1,600 adult flicks.
Over the years, he also managed to
perform in his own MTV rap video,
to serve as a consultant on movies
such as Boogie Nights and to land
small, mostly cameo and bit roles in
55 legit films and TV shows, includ-
ing Nash Bridges.
His family wasn't thrilled with his
career choice, but staunchly supported
his First Amendment rights when a
film-related bust forced him to fight a
case in court.
"Jewish families tend to be more liberal
than Christian ones," says the performer,
citing the preponderance of Jewish men
in porn. "They aren't obsessed by the
fear of the devil or going to hell."
It was Jeremy who was fearful when
Gill approached him about making
Porn Star in 1999. "I think Ron wor-
ried we'd sort of make fun of him," says
the director, who courted the actor for
three months before gaining his trust.
"Actually the structure of the film is
comedy. It's about a guy who makes a
pact with the devil to get famous, but
once granted [his wish], he realizes it's
not the kind of fame he wants."
The garrulous Jeremy — who hopes
to wed his girlfriend in a synagogue
and raise their kids Jewish — is
momentarily silent when asked how
he'd feel if he had a daughter who
wanted to do porn. "That's the tough-
est question," he admits. "There is
still such a double standard for men
and women about sex. But my daugh-
ter would have the best argument in
her favor: the three magical words,
`You did it." ❑

Porn Star begins its exclusive
one-week engagement at
Landmark's Main Art Theatre in
Royal Oak Friday, April 5. The
film includes explicit scenes and
is not suitable for children.

Southern Story

The lynching of Leo Frank would for-
ever change, the face of Uhry's Atlanta.
"The German Jews in Atlanta had
an illusion," explains Eli Evans, a fel-
low Southerner and author of The
Lonely Days Were Sundays. "The illu-
sion was that if they had property and
money, they were part of the white
establishment."
While Uhry was writing Ballyhoo,
noted Broadway producer/director
Hal Prince asked Uhry why Atlanta
seemed so anxious to assimilate.
"I said, 'I guess it's because of the
Leo Frank case," Uhry recalls. "I told
him the story and he said, 'My God,
that's a musical.'
"He meant it because the emotions
are so big. It seems to be best expressed
with music. It's such a passionate story.
It was a real joy to work on because it's
such rich material," Uhry adds.
As a Southerner, he understood why
non-Jewish Georgians felt oppressed
and victimized. Its sad and under-
standable how they had to blame
somebody, so they blamed the
Yankees who sort of enslaved them
and took their farms away from them.
"They had to put their little children
to work in factories. So they naturally
hated their bosses. And a lot of the bosses
were Yankees. This particular boss was a
Yankee and a Jew. He wasn't a very pleas-
ant man to work for. I feel that almost
everybody in this story is a victim." ❑
