Hotel, Carl's ... Berman's held the edge
because of its great cottage fried potatoes
that were served with the luscious steaks.
Among the best simple dishes of the
French provinces was at Ponchartrain
Wine Cellars on Lamed ... also
acclaimed for its invention of the Cold
Duck wine and champagne combina-
tion.
Among the best places to go for an
after-hours Coney Island were Lafayette,
American and State Coney Islands ...
with Lafayette, owned by Bill Keros,
flanked on one side by American,
owned by brother Gus, and on the
other side, State Coney Island owned by
both.
Few places had a better prime rib than
Carl's Chop House, where owner Carl
Rosenfeld went from the tire business
into the restaurant game when his part-
ner from Cleveland scooted out in the
middle of the night and Carl was left
with their Grand River Chop House ...
which became Carl's.
Best bevy of places to go for food and
entertainment ... was almost anywhere
in Detroit.
Four Dukes Supper Club, Ted's,
Wedgewood Room, Charlie Costello's,
Strong's Pavilion at Cass Lake, the Big
House at Woodhull Lake, Atlantic
Gardens, Phil Berke's Clique, Uptown,
Club 48, Greenfield's, Chesterfield
Lounge owned by Hy and Esther
Gastman, Samuel's Brothers, Edjo's,
Alamo, owned by Max Spiegelman who
manned the cash register ... even though
he was blind and the folding money
wasn't in Braille ... and Stu Siegel, who
went on to become one of the best pit
bosses Las Vegas had.
Gotham Lounge, enjoying Bob Wyatt
at the organ, with Sonny Wilson, Eagle
Dairy, Al Siegel's Elmwood Casino in
Windsor, where almost every singing
and dancing star appeared, Lee &
Eddie's, Latin Quarter owned by Lou
Walters and then Jean Goldkette,
Brown's Drugs, Korn's, Grunt's, Miller's
Delicatessen, San-Min Chinese restau-
rant, Gay Haven, from where Jackie
Kannon went on to national stardom,
Takis Grill, Copper Kettle in Mt.
Clemens, Afterglow owned by Sam
Fertel, where Danny Holley's excellent
organ-playing was a standout, King
Fong's, Bagley Bar, Sammy G's,
Manhattan Restaurant, Deutch's
Restaurant, the Bagel.

avoid attention ... and Sammy said, "I

anymore."
Tom's Tavern on West Seven Mile
Road,-where you thought one leg was
shorter than the other because of the
slanted walls ... and being there one day
when Tom decided to go to the horse
races, gave keys to a customer, and
walked out telling the surprised gent
that he was the new boss until Tom
came back,. Belmont Lounge, owned by
Ted Moss, Main Street Bar, bossed by
Morrie Gruskin.

60 years of memories ... that thankful-
ly cannot be erased or wiped out by fire
or water. ❑
