"I discuss anything that's of interest to me and get immediate feedback. We have an audience of about 2 mil- lion different people listening to part of the show every_ week, and at any given moment on the show, there will be between 200,000 and a half mil- lion people listening. Members of our audience are very smart, know a lot and are interested in a lot." An issue recently explored by Medved has to do with attitudes toward Islam. He believes that the media in general is not presenting an . accurate portrayal of the way the reli- gion is, practiced. "The truth of the matter is that the president of the United States wants us to believe that Islam is a religion of peace, but it is not," Medved alleges. "That's not the history of Islam. That's not the present of Islam. I'd like to believe that it would be the future of Islam. "Wherever there is what is called `an Islamist movement' anywhere in the world, it's expressed in violence. I was very struck recently by an article that was buried in the New York Times about very poor farmers who were being slaughtered in Kashmir for no other crime than they hap- pened to be Hindu living in a Muslim area. Christians are slaugh- tered regularly in Nigeria, yet we pay very'little attention to this reality. "It seems to me that it is high time that at least those of us in the Jewish community — and really everyone in the country — looked honestly at the notion that Islam is a real problem. That's the kind of thing we talk about on the air." CI Michael Medved speaks 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. There is no charge for the evening, which includes a dessert reception, but reservations are required. Call (248) 559-1500, Ext. 236. The Michael Medved Show, air- ing 4-6 p.m. daily, debuts Monday, April 1, on WCAR-AM (1190). The show can be heard in its entirety 4-7 a.m_ the following day.
