one community," he says. As president
of the Conservative Michigan
Rabbinical Assembly, he has included
rabbis of other denominations in the
organization's functions.
"For Adat Shalom, [the Reform]
Temple Israel and the Jewish
Community Center to sponsor adult
education programming together is a
natural," he says.
But his hope is for more community-
inclusive events like Yom HaShoah
(Holocaust Remembrance Day) and
Yom Ha'Atzmaut (Israel Independence
Day) programming.
For members of Shir Tikvah, sharing
their Shabbat service with Temple Shir
Shalom members was "a great collabora-
tive opportunity," says Rabbi Arnie
Sleutelberg of Shir Tikvah.
"Being able to bring the style of Reb
Shlomo Carlebach to their service
brought a very different type of worship
to Shir Shalom," he says of the late
singer and teacher, whose music is very
much a part of Shir Tikvah life.
Education and sharing programs with
other religious groups also have become
more frequent, such as the long-standing
connection between Temple Beth El and
the Greater New Mt. Moriah
Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit.
Relationships between Jewish and

other ethnic groups also are forming. At
Temple Israel, the JACOB project con-
nects Jews and Chaldeans.
And in Oak Park, Rabbi Spolter says
synagogue projects that have been held
with members of Young Israel of Oak
Park, the Conservative Congregation
Beth Shalom and the Reform Temple
Emanu-El "help create a sense of com-
munity for all Jews."

Educating Future Generations

Like many rabbis, Rabbi Shemtov sees
the synagogue becoming a place that
reaches out to Jews through education. -
"We know people are interested in
Jewish knowledge, Jewish growth, per-
sonal observance and adherence to
mitzvot," he says.
Through Synagogue 2000, a nation-
al project to enhance synagogue life,
Conservative and Reform synagogues
will be paying attention to education.
"The next task of Synagogue 2000 is
aimed at creating a congregation of
learning and of learners," says Harlene
Appelman, director of the Federation's
Alliance for Jewish Education.
'As we look at learning — not just
afternoon school and early education
— we see the hope of congregations
creating lifelong learners who will turn
that learning into action."

Other Enhancements

Within the Adat Shalom con-
gregation, Rabbi Yoskowitz
looks toward increased regular
Jewish participation.
Shir Tikvah's Rabbi
Sleutelberg says, "The key is
for the synagogue to be recep-
tive to an array of options and
to always be open to possibili-
ties."
For many congregations, like
Congregation B'nai Moshe and
Congregation Shaarey Zedek,
