Report: IBM Had
Bigger Role In Shoah
New York/JTA •— A Holocaust scholar
says new evidence shows IBM had a
larger role in the Nazi extermination of
Polish Jewry than was previously known.
Nazi documents and testimony from
Polish eyewitnesses make clear that
IBM's railroad management programs
and custom-designed punch cards were
provided to the Third Reich by a sub-
sidiary based in Warsaw but controlled
from New York, according to new evi-
dence compiled by scholar Edwin Black.
In his book IBM and the Holocaust,
Black already had identified the role of
IBM technology in the Nazi killing
process, and tried to show that IBM's
relationship with the Nazis was more
than the company has admitted. IBM
has said its German subsidiary was
under the control of Nazi authorities
before and during World War II. An
IBM spokeswoman had no informa-
tion on the Polish subsidiary, and said
the company is still in the process of
organizing its archives. Relevant docu-
ments will be donated to research
facilities, she said.

U.N. Workers
Are Killed
Ramallah/JTA — Two United Nations
observers were shot and killed, report-
edly by Palestinian gunmen, in the
West Bank.
The members of the Temporary
International Presence in Hebron were
using a road frequented by Israeli set-
tlers when their car was shot at,
according to Israeli military officials. A
third member, who was lightly wound-
ed, told Israel Radio that the group
was attacked by a single gunman wear-
ing a Palestinian Authority police uni-
form. Palestinian officials denied any
Palestinian involvement and said Israeli
soldiers were reponsible.
