EXPERIENCE SPEAKS FOR ITSELF
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Relationship With Israel
Aronson doesn't expect another 1967
or 1973 war of that magnitude
between Israel and its Arab neigh-
bors, but, he said, he hopes the
region can get beyond these "terrible
demoralizing, horrible heartbreaking
constant terror wars."
"Then we'll have a great opportu-
nity to develop Jewish identities
together, and experience the excite-
ment of what that means to bring us
together with Israelis around the
issue of Jewish education, Jewish
identity and Jewish awareness."
He said that Jews who visit from
Israel are "blown away" by the differ-
ent expressions of Jewish practice in
this community.
"I talked to some of the Israelis
who recently went to the Jewish
Academy of Metropolitan Detroit
[on the Applebaum campus]. They
saw four different minyans. They
were dumbfounded," he said. "low,
our partners in Israel who come back
from these visits are experimenting
with different expressions of Jewish
identity. They're building their own
kind of communal synagogues.
They're doing real bar and bat mitz-
vah education, which never took
place in the region. They're studying
together.
"Peace will afford us the opportu-
nity to get us into this area much
more strongly and successfully than
we can now," he said.
JEWISH VALUES
"I love the fact that in Judaism,
there is always more to learn,
something new to discover."
INCREDIBLE FRIENDSHIPS
"It's easy to make friends at JAMD.
Anywhere else I wouldn't have
gotten involved in the play or robotics club.
At JAMD, I have.
JAMD has really opened up my world."
The Jewish Academy is accepting applications for grades 9 -12
for the 2002 - 2003 academic year.
JAMD is offering four $1,000 merit-based scholarships
to be applied towards tuition at the Academy.
To request an application for this merit scholarship, contact the Academy office.
Scholarship application deadline is May 1, 2002.
The Jewish Academy of Metropolitan Detroit is located at the
Jewish Community Center on the Eugene and Marcia Applebaum
Jewish Community Campus.

Beyond Our Community
Aronson said he would like to see
greater collaboration and involve-
ment of the Jewish community in
Detroit and the world.
"I see us getting away from our
sense of isolation, which I think we
are still remembering from the days
when the Jewish community really
was isolated," he said. "With the new
Jewish leadership, that memory is
going to become more distant."
He sees greater involvement in the
city of Detroit, which he hopes will
go through a renaissance.
Overall, Aronson is "cautiously
optimistic" about the future of the
Detroit Jewish community.
"The road is fairly clear. I don't
think there's a lot of rocket science
involved in where we have to go to
get there," he said. "The key is going
to be the people, and whether the
new generation will take the reins
that our veteran generation are giving
them now, and say `Ilineni, I'm
going to do it.' "
"I came to JAMD in 10th grade
for a more personal experience.
JAMD teachers take
the time to know your strengths
and weaknesses."
