The 196-acre Jewish Community
Campus at Maple and Drake in West
Bloomfield became known as the
Eugene and Marcia Applebaum Jewish
Community Campus.
David Hermelin and friends donated
$10 million to create the Hermelin Brain
Tumor Center as part of the Detroit-
based Henry Ford Health System.
Yeshivat Akiva moved from its home
on Southfield Road in Lathrup Village
to the former Beth Achim on 12 Mile
in Southfield. The Norma Jean and
Edward Meer Early Childhood
Development Center opened on the
campus of the Yeshiva Beth Yehudah
in Southfield.
Sinai Hospital, owned by the
Detroit Medical Center, moved its
base of operations to neighboring
Grace Hospital.
In 1999, the Detroit Jewish com-
munity mourned the loss of several of
its marquee names: businessmen
Marvin Berlin, Stephen Levitz and
Stanley Winkelman, Judge Victor
Baum, Rabbi Herbert Eskin and
Rabbi Richard C. Hertz.

(uprising) began and continues to

In its longest tribute to anyone
ever, the Jewish News devoted much
of its Dec. 1 edition to David
Hermelin, who died of brain cancer
nine days earlier at age 63.

The Holocaust Memorial Center
announced it acquired Farmington
Hills land along Orchard Lake Road,
north of 12 Mile, for a larger build-
ing ... the Sephardic community
broke ground for its new West
Bloomfield synagogue on the north-
west corner of Walnut Lake and
Orchard Lake roads ... happy
browsers found bargains, but were
saddened to learn that the Brandeis
Book Sale at Southfield's Tel-12 Mall
was the last one after 40 years.
On Sept. 11, Al Qaida terrorists
used passenger planes to attack the
World Trade Center in New York
City and the Pentagon in Arlington;
Va.; a fourth plane crashed in
Pennsylvania.

on the last Sunday of the first month
in 2002. The staff moved to a differ-
ent location and produced an issue
