T

wo Jewish Illinois glass collectors have picked a
Michigan. gallery to showcase — and eventually
keep — diverse works they have found in travels
around the world.
Richard and Louise Abrahams, who own more than 100
original glass designs, have offered their studio-made pieces
to the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery on the campus of the
University of Michigan-Dearborn.
"The Richard and Louise Abrahams Glass Collection:
Selected Works," an exhibit of nearly 30 pieces, will be
shown through April 26 to advance the celebration of
Michigan Glass Month.
"The works of art collected by Mr. and Mrs. Abrahams
have been created by some of the most highly respected
artists working in glass today," says Kenneth Gross, director
of the Art Museum Project at UM-D. "We are very happy
to be able to bring them to the public."

The range of the coun-
tries represented in the
collection can be seen in
just four random works:
Indigo Dream, by Dale
Chihuly (United States);
Prisoner of Continuity, by Scott
Chaseling (Australia); Batman, by
Lino Tagliapietra.(Italy); and Blue
Duck, by Robbie Miller (England).
Richard and Louise Abrahams,
members of several Jewish organiza-
tions, also have been attracted to
works by Jewish artists, and there are
examples in the current exhibit. These
include Steven Weinberg's Hour Glass Boat
and Marvin Lipofsky's Meisenthal #8.
"My wife and I got into collecting [glass] soon after I so
my business five years ago," explains Abrahams, 72, formerly
a manufacturer of electric motors.
"We began with mostly American artists, but our collec-
tion has become more international because we travel a lot.
