Emory

there were many ... were at Checker Bar,
on a napkin at Miller's Bar, and
Maximillian's on Woodward.
One of the best waitresses ... and the
list of terrific ones is very long ... was
Pauline Baron at Saksey's on Woodward,
owned by Sam Gilbert and Irving Sachs
... always smiling, always serving and tak-
ing away from the back of you to the left
and right ... always giving time to read
the menu ... always bringing fresh coffee
in clean cups ... always cordial and effi-
cient.
Among the best Greek salads was at
Yassoo's Greek Village on Woodward ...
with a better dressing that no one has yet
come up with.
One of the best new concoctions in
food was at the Stader Lounge Bar on
Washington Blvd., where chef August
Gassman scooped potatoes out of their
skin after baking ... and blended them
with butter, cream, chopped chives and
some spice ... put them backin the skin
and sprinkled paprika on top ... Then
others started putting them in the oven
-s
again.
A popular singles bar was inopolis'
on 12 Mile Road ... voted among
America's top ones by Playboy Magazine
... before Johnny and Peter Ginopolis
reversed directions by making it into a
full-fledged family restaurant.
Difficult to beat the beef Wellington at
Benno Steinborn's Benno's in Indian
Village ... where you needed a reservation
... even when the place was empty ... and
the one at the Vineyard's on Franklin
when owned by John Laffrey.
Among the better wine cellars was at
Vargo's on West Six Mile, where the
owner, Don Vargo, wanted to move to
California just to grow grapes and make
wine ... The one that Les Gruber had at
the London Chop House wasn't bad,
either.
Among the best butterfly shrimp
sauces was at Town Pump on Cass
Avenue, owned by Cass, Henry and
Louie Warshaw ... I think I finally have
all the sauce ingredients down pat ...
except for one item which for the life of
me I can't put my finger on.
A top choice for Polynesian food was
the Chin Tiki on Cass ... also for tropical
cocktails ... Trader Vic's on Washington
Blvd. was good, too.
Among the finest catering setups was
Raleigh House on Telegraph, where
native-born Israeli, Sammy Lieberman
who used to have Sammy's Avalon Room
on Coolidge, ran one of the nation's
largest catering operations...and three
restaurants within it at the same time:
[House of Lords, Giraffe and Piccadilly
Deli.].
A real dandy all-around employee was
