Armed Worshipers
Tel Aviv/JTA — Israel's chief rabbis
are permitting worshipers to carry
weapons and use cell phones to pro-
tect their synagogues over Passover.
Jewish law forbids touching
weapons and electronics on Shabbat
and holidays except in emergencies,
but responding to the threat of terror
attacks on synagogues and a special
request from the Religious Affairs
Ministry, the rabbinate is agreeing to
new measures.
The ministry circulated a state-
ment to all Israeli synagogues
instructing them to appoint at least
four worshipers as armed guards and
to place several cell phones within
reach.

Pesach, Sudan
New York/JTA — The Reform move-
ment is asking people to make a con-
nection between Passover and slavery
in Sudan. The Religious Action
Center of Reform Judaism joined
with the American Anti-Slavery
Group to launch the Passover Project,
a new Web resource with ready-to-use
materials, including religious school
lesson plans, youth group ideas, a
rabbinic sermon and a special prayer
to be recited at a seder.
"The Haggadah commands us to
`remember the stranger, for we were
strangers in the land of Egypt.' This
is a call to action, a call for us to rise
up against slavery and tyranny in our
own time," said the director of the
center, Rabbi David Saperstein. The
