"We didn't think they really
understood what the main issue
was," said Kellman. "Although it was
apologetic, they talked about word-
ing being improper when, in reality,
the whole tone of the [column] was
really anti-Semitic. Changing a few
words or being careful how you say
it was not going to change the fact
that they didn't understand why this
was an anti-Semitic article."
The ADL will meet with school
officials on April 9, when school
resumes after a two-week spring
break.
"We don't want this to be an
ongoing project to keep discussing,
but they have really been very alert
to us and they are behaving in an
appropriate way," said Kellman, who
added that the paper will print
rebuttals from Jewish students talk-
ing about why they didn't like the
tone of the article and what it meant
to them.
Parents have been concerned.
"I was very saddened to see an
award-winning publication and a
school with an excellent reputation
to have countenanced this kind of -
editorial," said Alyssa Martina of
Huntington Woods.
"I think this student is a very nice
man and I don't think he was trying
to hurt other students by it, but I
think it saddened me that nobody
took a closer look at the ramifica-
tions."
Another parent, Michelle Zeid of
Bloomfield Hills, said in a state-.
ment: "It is unfortunate that this
article was printed in the student
newspaper. However, the administra-
tion has taken it seriously and is tak-
ing steps to rectify the situation.
Hopefully, this will evolve into a
positive learning experience for all
involved.
Mrkonic was apologetic.
"I wish to apologize to the
Country Day community and the
Jewish community at large for any
offense taken to my February Day
Times column," said Mrkonic in a
statement.
"I acknowledge that, regardless of
my intent, delivering my comments
in a manner such that they could be
misconstrued was a misstep. I never
intended to insult any person, group
or faith. I apologize to anyone that I
have offended, and deeply regret any
pain that the article has caused." 0
