In the past, Cohen had traveled
extensively, visiting Mexico, Brazil,
Russia, China and a handful of
European countries. But, she said,
Morocco "took my breath away."
Aside from the friendship-build-
ing, the trip exposed Cohen to life
in a predominantly Muslim country,
an experience filled with new ethnic
experiences. A food writer for the
Jewish News, she was able to experi-
ence different cuisine than she was
used to, sampling fine pastries and
spicy dishes. She toured old syna-
gogues and Jewish cemeteries, slept
in a tent in the desert and rode
camels.
"I loved it. I loved everything
about it. I was sad when it was
over," Cohen said.
Some people are simply looking
for a wonderful way to spend family
time together. Like the Kayes, the
Stewart family of Bloomfield Hills
recently traveled to Italy, an experi-
ence that left them astonished at the
variety of culture within the country.
"That was really something to
experience, all of that variety in the
space of 14 days in four cities,"
Barbara Stewart said. "It was a well-
rounded trip."
With their son Justin, Ron and
Barbara Stewart began in Rome
where they marveled at the architec-
ture and history. After three days,
they ventured to Florence, a high-
light of the trip. They shopped and
scoured museums. Justin met up
with friends who were staying in
Florence while Barbara took in cul-
tural points.
"When we were planning the trip,
my husband was reluctant to fly that
distance. He is a Disney World
freak. He said, 'We could go to
Epcot Center and see all of the
countries in two hours,' " she
recalled, laughing.
After a disappointingly crowded
stay in Venice, they finished their trip
in Stresa, a small resort town near
Lake Como in northern Italy. The
Stewarts took in the local culture and
relaxed. "My husband is the type of
person who just likes to rest on vaca-
tion," said Barbara, "so I think that
was the best part of the trip for him.
Really, there was something for all of.
us on that vacation:" ❑
