Israel Solidarity
Event March 24

. . . A RETIREMENT COMMUNITY

THAT WON'T CRAMP YOUR STYLE

"We Stand With Israel" is the
theme of a national solidarity
event planned for March 24 in
New York City by the Conference
of Presidents of Major American
Jewish Organizations, in partner-
ship with the United Jewish
Communities, the umbrella group
of the federation system.
Gatherings in 50-100 Jewish
communities across the country
also are anticipated. Although still
in the planning stages, the gather-
ings will include a satellite broad-
cast that organizers hope will fea-
ture Israeli Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon and other top Israeli
politicians, along with terror vic-
tims and American political lead-
ers.
Details are not yet firm.
"Detroit is a community very
committed to Israel. We will be
part of this in some way, but now
we're exploring possibilities," said
Allan Gale, an assistant director at
the Jewish Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit.
As the Palestinian intifada
(uprising) intensified last fall,
Jewish communal leaders had
planned a major pro-Israel rally in
New York. But, because the event
had been set for soon after Sept.
11, it was canceled for security
reasons.
Organizers of the March event
say it will be "very different," in
part because of its somber nature,
in part because of security con-
cerns.
And the gatherings will not be
public events, so attendance will
be limited, with member organiza-
tions issuing tickets to their con-
stituencies.
"Jews in the United States need
an opportunity to give expression
to the broad-based support and
solidarity they feel with Israel at
this difficult time, and I think the
people of Israel need to know and
have it reaffirmed that American
Jewry is standing with them," said
Malcolm Hoenlein, Conference of
Presidents executive vice chair-
man. ❑
