Y.

and the Jews were free ro leave the
home.
During her speech, she recounted
several miraculous events, not the
least of which was that she and her
two sisters remained unaware of the
strangers' presence in their own
home. Her parents helped to hide
the people in crawl spaces beneath
floorboards during three harrowing
searches by German soldiers and fed
them despite strict war rations. But
mostly, she reminded the audience
that her parents were no angels, say-
ing that her father in particular was
very rebellious.
"God took this rebellious heart
and used it for good. God wasn't
looking for perfect people and yet
they were good enough for this,"
she said. "They could have stood by
and not done anything or do what-
ever they could do in their power to
help out. That is what they choose
to do."
Burke-Kooistra's parents were later
honored by the Dutch monarchy
and had a tree planted in their
honor on the Avenue of the
Righteous at Yad Vashem in Israel.
Burke-Kooistra met her husband in
Israel and later converted to
Judaism.
The service continued with a
meditation and an excerpt from a
concentration camp victim's diary. It
concluded with the reading of more
accounts of victims, survivors and
those who hid survivors.
A reception followed in the con-
gregation's former convent, now
Seton Hall. There, Esther M. Posner
of Southfield, a Holocaust survivor
who was hidden with her family,
told her story of hiding behind false
walls to escape Nazi patrols and
bouncing from one home td the
next to stay alive (see accompanying
story).
U.S. Rep. Joe Knollenberg, R-
Bloomfield Township, also addressed
the crowd, giving praise to the insti-
tute and applauding the bravery of
those like the Kooistras who defied
the Nazis to save strangers.
Some Jews attended the service,
but Rachel Pladwinsky of
Bloomfield Hills, the wife of a
Holocaust survivor and a member of
Temple Beth El, said she was sur-
prised there weren't more. "It was in
the Jewish News, but there really
wasn't anything [publicized] through
the congregations.
I think a lot of
0
Jews would have appreciated attend-
ing such a service," she said.
