Academy Places
In Robot Event

TheJewish Academy of
Metropolitan Detroit placed 11th out
of 24 teams in a'recent robotics corn-
petition. The seven 9th- to 11th-
graders built the robot from scratch.
"In order to appreciate this, you
have to know that the kids are all
`rookies'," says Stu Schultz, head of the
science department at JAMD. "This is
the first time they have built anything
like this They have never entered any
kind of formal competition before.
And they do this on their own time,
during lunch or after school."
In competition, the emphasis is put
on functional performance of the
robots. "The students don't build sci-
ence fiction-looking robots," says
Schultz. "They built their robot out of
things like window lift motors and
pneumatic controls. The idea is to put
our robot through a series of activities
that demonstrate complex maneuver-
ability."
"For example." says Schultz, "your
robot has to be able to put two differ-
ent sized balls into a scale model of a
house while another robot tries the
same things at the same time."
The competition, organized by the
Oakland County Competitive
Robotics Association, attracts teams
from 30 area schools.
JAMD student Max Braverman told
Channel 7 , "This is a time consuming
event, but watching your metal cre-
ation win a match is really cool."
"The students are only allowed to
build their robots out of certain mate-
rials and components," says Schultz.
"They can only use basic hand tools
or, at most, a drill press. By the time
they were done, they had put in
between 100 and 200 hours on the
project."
