Sedated," "Rockaway Beach," "Teenage
Lobotomy" and the title song of the
1989 film Rock V Roll High School
carved a distinctive, off-the-wall niche.
Additionally, the band frequently
recorded cover versions of 1960s
oldies, assuming the role of messen-
gers to a blank generation that knew
little of rock 'n' roll's past.
Tamarkin, who is Jewish and the
author of a soon-to-be-published
biography of the Jefferson Airplane,
interviewed Ramone for Goldmine
magazine in 1983. He recalled him to
be an unaffected rock star and "a real
New Yawker."
Ramone did not express his
Jewishness outwardly, Tamarkin
remembers, but three years later, the
so-called "Father of Punk" targeted a
controversial Jewish matter on the
Ramones' 1986 album Animal Boy. A
tune titled "My Brain is Hanging
Upside Down (Bonzo Goes to
Bitburg)" criticized President Reagan
for visiting a Nazi military graveyard
in Bitburg, West Germany, in 1985.
After laying a wreath there, Reagan
defended his visit by saying that the
German soldiers "were victims, just as
surely as the victims of the concentra-
tion camp."
Personally angered, Ramone causti-
cally sang, "You're a politician. Don't
be one of Hitler's children," revealing
a more socially conscious and person-
al side of the gangly lead singer's per-
sonality.
New interest in the Ramones music
prompted Rhino Records to reissue
the group's early albums — The

Ramones, Leave Home, Rocket To Russia

tered CDs last year — all expanded

In February, Santuary Records
released Don't Worry About Me, a
posthumous solo album by Joey
Ramone that spins a fitting epitaph to
the strong-willed rock star's oddball
career. ❑
