ickey Leigh, Joey
Ramone's younger broth-
er, will accompany his
mother, Charlotte Lesher, to the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame cere-
monies, where both have been asked
to make acceptance remarks. Leigh
is a rock musician and a freelance
music writer who knew his celebrity
sibling better than anyone.
JN: According to Rolling Stone mag-
azine, Mort
, Sahl once defined cut-
tural bohemia as "Jews preten
to be Italians," noting '`you could
hardly find a livelier example than
Joey." Why wasn't it well known
that your brother was Jewish?
ML: Most people thought that he
was Spanish, so they had the "ish"
part right.
JN: How would you describe your
Jewish upbringing?
ML: My mom Wasn't very religious;
my dad was casually religious. We
were Reform. My brother and I both
had bar mitzvahs, but we celebrated
Christmas and Chanukah, as well
We were more of an American-type
family that saw both holidays as the
American thing to do.
JN: What do you miss most about
your brother?
MI.,: The thing I miss most about
him is his unique sense of humor and
his unique perspective on the world.
He was a complicated guy who tried
not to have too much pretense about
his celebrity There was always a bit
of sibling rivalry, but we did love each
other very much, and I miss him ter-
ribly.
JN: How did you and your mother
cope with the fact that Joey was
terminally ill?
ML: He'd been plagued with med-
ical problems his whole life, but it
was pure shock and dismay. He bat-
tled the disease for almost seven
years, then he fell and broke his hip,
which made his whole condition
spiral downward. Before that, he
was doing very well and his blood
counts were improving. We had
hopes that he'd beat it and he
