Jacobs — who first coined the
phrase "We was robbed" — became
Schmeling's manager in 1929 and
quickly began a big publicity cam-
paign for the boxer.
"He sponsored him and got rid of
some poor management that
Schmeling had when he first came
over [to America] in the 1920s. There
was a real bond that developed. Jacobs
fronted Schmeling money when he
needed it at that time," says Paymer.
"There was this irony that they were
calling Schmeling a Nazi and calling
Jacobs a traitor to his country as a Jew
supposedly supporting a Nazi.
"In that regard, Joe Jacobs and

Jack Blackburn; Peta Wilson (La
Femme Nikita) as Schmeling's wife,
Czechoslovakian actress Anny Ondra;
and Bruce Weitz, as boxing promoter
"Uncle" Mike Jacobs.
"[Mike] Jacobs was, at the time and
for about 20 years, the most powerful
figure in the fight game in New York,"
says Weitz, best known for his role of
Mick Belker on Hill Street Blues.
"He actually controlled all of the box-
ing in New York City and surrounding
areas. So, every big fight had to go
through him. He was Joe Louis' pro-
moter, and a little bit of a scoundrel."
