Cantor Rube, like his father, was a
mohel (ritual circumciser). He was also
a member of the Cantors Assembly
and was an officer and president of
the Cantors Council of Detroit for
eight years.
For the Shaarey Zedek family,
Cantor Rube was the voice of con-
science on standards of observance
and mentshlekeit (being a decent per-
son). Said Rabbi Groner: "He encour-
aged us to be meticulous in observing
our traditions." Shaarey Zedek Rabbi
Joseph Krakoff cited the cantor's
"abundant kindness."
Cantor Rube served
as executive secretary of
Sha.arey Zedek's Chevra
Kadisha (burial socie-
ty). He worked with all
