Strange Friit• Rock Apocopha, an

Loren, was chosen for the 2002 Biennial
at New York's Whitney Museum of
American Art after it was noticed on

Contemporary Art.
Loren, owner of the Book Beat in
Oak Park, completed the piece in collab-
oration with Los Angeles artists and for-
mer Michigan residents Mike Kelley and
Jim Shaw The combination of murals
and video, shown at the Detroit
Institute of Arts as part of the city's tri-
centennial celebration, will be among
113 works on exhibit March 7-May 26

practice throughout the country" says
the exhibition's chief curator, Lawrence
Rinder. "Artists are exploring a wide
range of media and new technologies.
that are giving them previously unimag-
ined freedoms."
Curators traveled to 43 towns and
cities in 27 states and Puerto Rico to
view and select works. Artists ranging
in age from 24-71 will be included in
the show.
Work Of _Memory
"The four large murals and video projec-
tion [of Strange Fri& Rock Apocgpha]
depict cultural. and historic landmarks of
Detroit, basically from the 1950s to the
1970s," says Loren, 46. He has collabo-
rated with Kelley and Shaw since his
college years, when they established their
Destroy All Monsters Art Collective.
The installation sees the times
through our eyes but does not try to
make an assessment of the times in a
realistic way. We're using our memories,
and that's how memory works. Over
time, a mythology can build up about
something, and we can exaggerate and
create something very personal."
Loren's video presents interviews
about personalities shown in the murals,
which were painted on canvas in a
style that resembles what might be
seen on carnival freak-show ban-
ners. He also has re-enactments of
what was said in the interviews
and therefore dubs his video a
pseudo-documentary. ,,
One mural, The Heart of Detroit
by Moonlight, has the city skyline in
the background and pictures rock
artists, some associated with the rad-
ical White Panther movement,
and children's TV hosts.
