ing Israeli soldiers and settlers. The
game has been available in Syria for

Cleric Who Helped
Jews Dies at 89

Warsaw/JTA — Monsignor Walter
Bayer, who saved Jews from the
Holocaust by giving them Catholic
baptism papers, died Monday at 89.
During the Nazi occupation of
Poland, Bayer hid some 50 Jews in his
house and had baptism papers pre-
pared for them.
He helped them escape to Austria,
Turkey, Spain and the United States.
A German officer searching for Jews
broke three of-Bayer's teeth with brass
knuckles, and Bayer lost nine family
members during the occupation.
Bayer later taught at the University of
Krakow with Rev. Karol Wojtyla, who
later became Pope John Paul II, and
the two were close friends.
