Captain Alfred Dreyfus (the
Jewish officer in the French
army falsely accused of trea-
son in 1895 and imprisoned
on Devils' Island). What was
the link?
A: Grieg (1843-1907) was
sensitized to the Dreyfus case
by his friend, Bjornstjerne
Bjornson (1832 1910),
Norway's leading national
writer. Bjornson had corre-
sponded with the great French
writer Emile Zola and praised
Zola for "J'Accuse," Zola's 1898
defense of Dreyfus.
In 1899, Grieg, who often had con-
ducted the renowned Colonne
Orchestra of Paris, was invited back.
Grieg wrote to the orchestra's founder,
.Eduard Colonne: "I hereby thank you
for your kind invitation, and am sorry
to inform you that due to the develop-
ment in the Dreyfus trial, I will not be
able to come to France at this moment.
Like every foreigner, I am deeply indig-
nant over the despicable manner your
country treats the law and justice, that I
do not feel capable of performing for a
French audience."
The letter, along with a photograph
of Dreyfus, is part of an exhibit in the
Grieg Museum on the grounds of
Grieg's house in Troldhaugen, Norway.

tion for the name Virginia?
A: There is no direct translation. - In the
early 1600s, Virginia was devised as a
name by the Virginia Company of
London in honor of Queen Elizabeth I
of England, "the virgin queen," to settle
North America. The word for "virgin"
in Hebrew, also used as a name, is
Alma.
"Elizabeth" is derived from the
Hebrew name, Elisheva (wife of
Aharon, see Exodus 6:23).
