the wonderful time
had at the annual Michigan Culinary
Food & Wine Extravaganza celebrat-
ing Mardi Gras.
This year, at Mac & Ray's
Restaurant and Banquet Center, may
have been one of the best of all ...
The almost 20 restaurants supplied
food of every kind and in most •
cases, choice wine ... Plenty of music
... Upstairs by Mel Ball and Colours
... Downstairs in the VIP Gold
Room, recording artists Suzie Marsh
and Dan Warren's "Warren
Commission".
Best food and wine pairing, as
determined by the panel of media
judges, was Cafe Cortina ... serving
handmade gnocchi with a delicate
porcini mushroom, truffle oil sauce
and parmesan crisp ... paired with a
2000 Jermann Pinot Grigio wine.
Steve & Rocky's was narrowly
edged out ... followed closely by
Golden Mushroom ... They were the
only three to score in the 90s ...
Scoring in the 80s included Beverly
Hills Grill, Mac & Ray's, Tom's
Oyster Bar, McCormick & Schmick,
WOW, Andiamo, Fatt -Daddy's,
Cuisine, Beans & Cornbread and
Crews Inn.
I was proud to be honorary chief
judge ... in the panel with Molly
Abraham and Jane Rayburn, Detroit
News; Ron Garbinski, Michigan Living;
Beverly Hatcher, Macomb Daily, Eleanor
and Ray Heald, Observer and Eccentric
Newspapers; and Megan Swoyer,
Michigan Meetings & Events Magazine.
The almost 800 attendees this year
were also asked to do personal judging
... Their first place choice was Steve &
Rocky's, with warm salmon, coarse grain
mustard, potato cakes with vermouth
sauce ... and Trimbach Pinot Gris 1999
Reserves ... Second place went to Mac &
Ray's, serving rack of lamb paired with
Penfolds Thomas Hyland's Australian
Shiraz 2000 ... Golden Mushroom was
selected third ... serving applewood
house-smoked salmon with boursin
cheese on crispy root vegetable chips,
drizzled with sundried tomato oil ...
accompanied by a 1999 New Zealand
Pinot Noir.
Around $50,000 was raised to help
send the Michigan Culinary Team to
