JUDAIC STUDY TOUR OF EASTERN EUROPE
AUGUST 4-20, 2002
Dr. Zvi Gitelman, Professor of
Political Science, and Judaic
Studies at the University of
Michigan, will lead a group to
Eastern Europe from where four
out of five American Jews trace
their ancestry. The trip will focus
on 4 countries: Poland, home to
3,500,000 Jews until 1939, with
its remnants of Jewish life going
back to the 15th century as well
as its infamous places of mass murder during the Holocaust;
Lithuania, with its charming cities of Kovno and Vilna, cradle of
"Misnagdic" Jewish learning; Czech Republic, whose capital city,
Prague, was a prominent center of Jewish culture in the 17th and
18th centuries and is still one of the most beautiful cities in the
world; Hungary, whose capital city
Budapest, splendidly displays the
glories of the Austro-Hungarian
Empire. In each country, the group
will have the opportunity to observe
the current revival of Jewish life
after the fall of Communism and to
meet with local Jewish communal
leaders.
