I went into a soundproof room with a
big window so I could watch Houchins
for cues. I put on a pair of headphones
and sang into a cool-looking professional
microphone. I ran through the song a
few times to warm up and worked to
eliminate most of my mistakes.
With the headphones on, it felt like
it was just the music and me, and that
made it easier to get into what I was
doing, without feeling self-conscious.
First we recorded verse by verse.
Then, I asked to do the entire song in
one take. (As it turned out, I was get-
ting the hang of it and we ended up
using most of that one.)
After playing back what I'd record-
ed, I told Houchins the bits I liked
best and he mixed them together.
Soon he put my own hot little CD
in my hot little -hand. Not bad. For
$35, you get up to an hour of studio
time, plus the CD.
While their space isn't too big,
Lebovitz and Houchins are flexible.
Music, poetry, audio books, comedy —
they'll record whatever you want to do.
And if you're a member of a guitar band
that wants to lay down its own sounds,
Studio 7 will provide the drum tracks.
"We don't have any Jewish songs in
our song list yet," Lebovitz acknowl-
edges, "but all someone has to do is
bring in
i an instrumental recording of
Jewish music and we can download it
so the person can sing along."
While there, I checked out the other
