Getting Ammunition
May Have Helped
I write in defense of Hymie Cutler,
director of the Michigan Committee
for a Safe Israel ("Atalena's Sinking
Proved A Disaster" Feb. 8, page 6),
when Irving Tukel ("Rabin Wrongly
Blamed For Capture," Feb. 15, page
6) said that Cutler blamed Rabin for
the sinking of the ammunition-car-
rying ship, the Atalena.
Mr. Cutler stated facts without
blaming anyone. He concluded by
saying the sinking of the Atalena
was a disaster for the Jewish people.
Was it?
It is known that the Jews defend-
ing Jerusalem ran out of ammuni-
tion and surrendered to the Arab
Legion commanded by the British.
It is speculation what the Jews
would have done if they had
received that ammunition even after
surrendering. They rose up against
the British before and may have
done so again.

Prayer Does Help
Promote Healing
Over the past five years, I have used
prayer to facilitate my patients' heal-
ing and my own ("Prayer and
Healing," Feb. 1, page 79). I am a
physician specializing in breast dis-
ease and the survivor of two breast
cancers.
Fear is often a barrier preventing
women from doing breast self-exam.
Prayer overcomes fear. I teach my
patients the following prayer to use
before they check themselves:
"Blessed God, Help me find any-
thing I need to find, Help me take
care of anything I need to take care
of. I'll do my part. You'll do yours.
The first line is easily changed or
omitted as the situation dictates.
The prayer can be used silently or
aloud by a professional before exam-
ining a patient.
My most memorable response
from a patient after I taught her the
prayer was, "That's not the prayer I
say. I say, 'Oh God, don't let me
find anything!"' We laughed and
agreed that her prayer defeated the
concept of self-exam.
I think (and pray) that she's doing
a better job now. I hope this prayer
helps your readers, be they patients,
health care professionals, or both.

War Dead Deserve
Photo Display
I hope that the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit will provide
space for a permanent display of
photos of our Jewish war dead who
have given their last full measure of
devotion ("Waiting For A Room,"
Dec. 21, page 29).
For my family's loss, I have, of
course, become a founding member
of the World War II memorial to be
constructed in Washington, D.C.,
and will be present at the cere-
monies.
A few years ago, a metropolitan
columnist made a snide remark at a
public meeting about Jewish men in
the military. I tried to set him
straight. A public memorial display
with a plaque with our numbers in
American wars would help to dispel
such ignorance.
The recent publicity of the
Buffalo soldiers and Tuskegee air-
men has made many aware of the
contributions of African Americans.
Can we do less?
